OUR STORY: "The Carmel"
Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church was founded in 1970, born from a vision shared by potential members and guided by E.J. Plummer. Since its inception, the church has called three locations home: 310 West Monroe Street, 137 East Indiana Avenue, and our current location at 1620 South St. Joseph Street.
The leadership reins were given to Reverend Rickardo Taylor, Sr. in 1998, when he returned to Mount Carmel—where he once worshiped as a youth—to serve as our appointed shepherd, continuing the legacy of strong, faith-driven leadership.
Located on the southeast side of South Bend, Mount Carmel is known not just for its worship, but for its unwavering commitment to community outreach. We actively support our community by providing meals and sharing the love of Christ with guests at Hope Rescue Mission. Our ministries collaborate to offer both physical nourishment and spiritual encouragement, extending our impact beyond the walls of the church.
In collaboration with 466Works, Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church has played an active role in revitalizing the surrounding neighborhood by contributing to the construction of new homes and investing in the long-term well-being of the community.
We have embraced our calling to “affect the world, one by one.” We remain committed to spreading the gospel and living out our faith through service, love, and outreach.
Christ is the head of our lives, and through Him, our path is guided and our future is ordained.

About 466Works
466 Works is a not-for-profit community development corporation created to develop opportunities in home ownership and to support community members in their efforts to enhance and revitalize the southeast neighborhood of South Bend, Indiana. 466 Works started as a project of the Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church and was incorporated in 2014. The 466 mission statement is “to revitalize the southeast neighborhood of South Bend in order to enhance the lives of all residents in the community”. The mission is fulfilled by the construction of new homes on vacant lots in the area and through collaboration with other organizations. In 2014, the Mount Carmel Church made a commitment to build their new church in the Southeast neighborhood. The minister and some church members decided that they wanted to work with neighbors to stabilize the surrounding neighborhood. First the group formed a committee which worked with the city to develop a strategic plan for the area. Then the group started out by building two homes on Indiana Street and selling them to homeowners. After this initial success, 466Works started building a few more homes every year. Along the way, 466 Works has partnered with lenders, the city of South Bend and builders which helps to insure a consistent, quality home. We are grateful to have these partnerships and look forward to delivering more homes for the future owners and the neighborhood. The project is expected to increase property values in the neighborhood, inspire adjacent homeowners to improve their properties and result in an improved appearance for the area with reduced vacant lots and overgrown trees. The proposed activity is needed because of the shortage of new housing stock in the city and the increase in housing costs over the past five years. 466 Works works with the city home buyer programs, the Sewer Lateral Reimbursement Program and the Federal Home Loan Bank Down Payment Assistance Program.
